Where did you grow up? Goldfield Ranch (Just Outside of Fountain Hills)

What is show jumping? Show jumping is a horseback riding sport where riders guide their horses over a series of jumps, like fences or water obstacles, in an arena. The aim is to get through the course as quickly as possible without knocking anything down or going over the time limit.

How did you get involved in the equestrian lifestyle? I got started with horses when my Dad built his dream house on a big property at a place called Goldfield Ranch. When we moved out there (I was 8), my mom gave me the option of continuing with gymnastics or I could start horse back riding since we had the property for it. We had a friend of a friend who needed a place to board her horses and she happened to be a trainer so she trained me and we boarded her horses. And that was the beginning!

What are the top 5 things people should know about buying horse properties?

Zoning and Laws – Make sure the property is zoned for horses and meets local regulations. Make sure to research the percentage of land that can have structures or buildings on it and if/how many acres per horse are required

Land Quality – Look for safe, well-draining land (this is a big deal because of our Monsoon Season).

Water Access – Ensure a reliable water source for your horses and facilities.

Facilities – Check for barns, stalls, round pens and arenas, or space to build what you need.

Maintenance Costs – Plan for ongoing upkeep of barns, fencing, water supplies sysytems, buildings etc.

Any advice to someone looking to get into show jumping or barrel racing, roping, etc? It is one of the most fun things you will ever do, but it is more of a lifestyle rather than just a hobby. At the height of my competition days I spent 2-5 hours a day at the barn training and taking care of my horses. So I would say if you can, lease a horse at first to see if you really love the lifestyle. I will say it is a great way to teach your kids a hard work ethic and responsibility!
